Ingredients
Method
- Wash turdal 4-5 times till water runs relatively clean. Add 3 cups of water to the dal and pressure cook dal for 4-5 whistles.
- Once cooked, whisk the dal to a smooth consistency.
- In a kadhai, heat oil. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add cumin seeds, add roughly crushed garlic and saute on low flame till it turns golden brown.
- Once garlic is golden brown, add hing, green chilles and curry leaves. mix well.
- Add finely chopped tomatoes. Cook tomatoes till they softens. Add turmeric powder and mix.
- Once tomatoes are cooked. Add the cooked dal and mix.
- Add jaggery and salt to taste. You can skip jaggery if you do not like it.
- Add water and adjust the consistency of the varan as per your preference.
- Let the dal come to a boil. Boil the dal for 3-4 minutes.
- Lastly, add finely chopped coriander leaves.
- Delicious and nutritious Phodnicha Varan is ready. Transfer to a serving bowl.
- Serve with soft steamed rice.
