About Flaxseed chutney (javas / Alsi Chutney)

Flaxseed also called Alsi or Jawas in Marathi are small oval-shaped seeds.

These tiny seeds are packed with nutrients and are well known for their numerous health benefits.

In recent years, flaxseeds have gained a lot of popularity due to their omega-3 fatty acid which is one of the best sources for vegan, vegetarian and plant-based diets.

However, flaxseeds have been consumed for thousands of years making them a great addition to a healthy diet.

At home, we often love to make dry Indian traditional chutneys like Curry Leaves Chutney, Garlic Chutney, and Karala Chutney to name a few, recently I have been indulging in this delicious & nutritious flaxseeds chutney along with some jowar bhakri and as a condiment to meals.

Flaxseed chutney is such a versatile condiment made with roasted flaxseeds along with herbs and spices.

This chutney will not only enhance the flavour of your meals but also will add a nutritional boost!

You can pair this flaxseed chutney with idli, dosa, jowar bhakri, rice bhakri, chapati, and dal rice.

Flaxseeds โ€“ For making this delicious and nutritious chutney, we will dry roast the whole flaxseeds till they start to pop up and get a nice crunch.

Sesame Seeds โ€“ We will also white sesame seeds (safed til) which enhances the taste of this chutney. We will dry roast the sesame seeds till they turn golden in colour.

Garlic โ€“ We will need 4 garlic cloves for this chutney. If you do not like the taste of garlic then skip it.

Curry Leaves โ€“ We will add 2 sprigs of curry leaves. Not only are curry leaves healthy but they give the freshness to this flaxseed chutney.

Dry Red Chillies โ€“ For that spice, we will add 4 dry chillies. You can use any variety of dry chillies for this recipe.

Dry Coconut โ€“ The nutty taste of dry coconut gives this chutney a beautiful flavour and also helps in getting the right texture.

Cumin Seed โ€“ We will add a teaspoon of cumin seeds which gives a nice warm earthy touch to this flaxseed chutney.

Red Chilli Powder โ€“ To spice up the chutney, I have used just half a teaspoon of red chilli powder. You can skip it if you donโ€™t want the chutney to be very spicy as we have already used dry red chillies.

Salt โ€“ To season.

Oil โ€“ We will need just about half a teaspoon of oil just to rost the garlic and curry leaves so they release their moisture and becomes dry, which makes the chutney stay good for long period of time.

Can I make flaxseed chutney without coconut?

Yes, you can skip adding dry coconut. The chutney will still be flavourful. Instead, if you wish, you can use roasted peants.

Is flaxseed chutney suitable for weight loss?

Yes, as flaxseeds are rich in fiber and help keep one full, including them in your daily diet is a great addition to a weight-loss diet.

Can I use ground flaxseeds instead of whole flaxseeds?

It is best to use whole flaxseed while making this chutney. Pre-ground flaxseeds might not provide the same freshness as the whole flaxseeds.

Can I skip adding sesame seeds to this chutney?

Sesame seeds adds a nutty flavour to this nutritious chutney, you can skip them or replace it with roasted peanuts or sunflower seeds.

Adding Peanuts โ€“ For that more nutty taste and texture, you can blend roasted peanuts along with the chutney mixture.

How to serve Flaxseed Chutney

With Bhakri (Millet Flatbread) โ€“ Mix the chutney with a spoonful of ghee and serve it with jowar bhakri.

With Rice โ€“ Mix it with steamed rice and drizzle of ghee, makes a comforting meal.

As a side dish, serve it along with dosa, uttapam, parathas, and chapati or serve it as a side dish with meals and snacks.

You can serve this healthy flaxseed chutney along with jowar bhakri with a spoonful of ghee.

You can pair the chutney with steamed rice and a dollop of ghee on top.

You can sprinkle it over breakfast like poha or upma.

You may also spread the chutney in between slices of bread and have a chutney sandwich.

Storage Options

Storage Tips For Flaxseed Chutney

Store the chutney in a clean, airtight container to prevent moisture. Keep it at room temperature.
This chutney stays good for 10 days at room temperature.

For longer storage, you can freeze the flaxseed chutney into small portions and use it when needed.

Always use a clean, dry spoon to scoop out the chutney to avoid contamination.

Flaxseed Chutney | Javas Chutney | Alsi Chutney Recipe

Ingredients
ย ย 

  • 1 cup Whole Flaxseeds
  • 1/4th cup Sesame Seeds
  • 1/4th cup Dry Coconut
  • 4 Dry Red Chillies
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 4 Garlic Cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon Oil

Instructions
ย 

  • Heat a thick bottom pan, add whole flaxseeds and dry roast for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously.
  • Once well roasted, they will start to pop & release their nutty aroma.
  • Transfer the flaxseeds to a plate & let them cool.
  • Dry roast sesame seeds for 2 minutes until they turn lightly brown. Once done, set them aside to cool.
  • Heat half a teaspoon of oil, toss in garlic cloves and saute for 30 seconds.
  • Add 2 sprigs of curry leaves, saute for another minute till leaves turn crisp.
  • Toss in dry red chillies, dry red chillies and cumin seeds.
  • Roast this mixture on low heat, stirring continuously.
  • Roast till coconut turns golden brown & the spices release their aroma.
  • Once roasted, set aside this mixture to cool down completely.
  • Once all the roasted ingredients have cooled, add them to the blender.
  • Add half a teaspoon of red chilli powder and salt to taste.
  • Blend on pulse mode to get a coarse texture.
  • Healthy Flaxseed Chutney is ready.
  • Store it in an airtight container and use when required.
